The finding that corn produced by one of the world’s agricultural giants could cause organ failure has been met with obvious concern by food activists and consumers alike. It’s not the first bout of negative publicity for Monsanto, which has been vilified for everything from producing Agent Orange, intimidating farmers, using aggressive tactics to squeeze out competition, pressuring farmers to be dependent on their products, and strongly promoting the use of genetically modified seeds here and abroad.

Read the complete article here.

Other countries at least have the decency to require labeling on genetically modified foods.

Monsanto could singlehandedly make me an eco-terrorist. Any time I read about them or see filmwork on them, I think: Why hasn’t someone burned it all to the ground? Creepyhorrific. Both them and my reaction to them.

Me too!

The best? When Monsanto sued Percy Schmeiser for his use of their Roundup Ready(r) canola plants, which had populated sections of his field after blowing into the area from surrounding farms.

Since then, as part of their genetic modification, Monsanto often removes the ability for plants to self-pollinate. So you buy seeds of Roundup resistant plants, grow them, and after harvest, you have to buy the seeds again. From Monsanto. The same fucking company who sold you the Roundup (through subsidiary Scott’s) in the first place.

Cool.  In so many ways. </sarcasm>

I remember seeing someone on a documentary (probably Percy Schmeiser, but there are probably many like him) who not only got sued and had to destroy basically his entire crop, which wasn’t all Roundup Ready, but also all the seeds he had carefully bred and some of which were important heritage varieties that no one will probably be able to recreate.

Thanks, corporations!!
